NYC - 1977

I am reading two books simultaneously that are both about New York City in 1977.

Ramones_1The first is the 33 1/3 series book on the Ramones first record, titled Ramones.

The book is about a lot more than that record.

It’s about the punk rock scene, the rock critics who covered it, and the musicians who made it.  I am enjoying it.

The second book is even more interesting.  It’s about the year 1977 in New York City, the urban decay, the polical race for mayor between Ed Koch and Mario Cuomo, and the New York Yankees World Series run fueled by Reggie Jackson and managed by Billy Martin.

Bronx_is_burningThe book is titled after Howard Cosell’s famous line during that world series, "Ladies and Genteleman, The Bronx is Burning".

If you lived in or around NYC during 1977, get this book

It brings back lots of memories for me, both good and bad.

It was 28 years ago, but it seems like yesterday.  1977 was a big year for New York City, a turning point in many ways.  And reading about it has been a lot of fun for me.
