In Defense of Free (continued)

I’ve been a fan of business models that start with free. I have found that is the best way to build a significant uptake on the web. That doesn’t mean you’ll never have any revenues. There are many ways to get paid for a web service that is free for everyone to use.

Josh Kopelman explains the reasons for this in his post, The Penny Gap.

between a service that is free and one that costs a penny.   I can’t
think of a single premium service that has achieved truly viral
distribution.  Can you?
