Forty Six Today

  Birthday Cake
  Originally uploaded by PinkCakeBox.

Bill Clinton was elected president of the United States when he was 46 so I am feeling a little bit like a slacker this morning.

But seriously,I always use these milestones we call birthdays to take measure of my life. And so far so good.

I’ve got a lot to be thankful for to be honest. My wife, my kids, my family, the greatest job I could ever have, wonderful colleagues, terrific companies to work with, a vibrant community that I get to be the moderator of.

So I’ll count my blessings today, work a bit, take advantage of being in long island with my family a bit, and generally celebrate mid life.

If you are in the mood for a bit of eye candy this morning, check out this flickr account. It’s by Pink Cake Box and they also have a blog with recipes. Wow.

As a Canadian, you are still a smidge over 44 to me. If it wasn’t for Bush’s monetary policy you would still be in the 30’s.Tough year.Hope the next is better 🙂

Here’s a happy-birthday thought: I’m 47, and I’m finding the whole “midlife crisis” thing overblown. The people I know between 40 and, say, 55 are at their absolute peak – just the right mix of seasoned judgment and experience, with still-young-enough bodies and minds; and a real readiness to accept change and even make change (whereas the under-40s often seem, to me, more eager to fit in than to make stuff happen). There’s a supposed cult of youth, but that seems merely visual. If you see The Bourne Ultimatum, you’ll see this in action — Julia Stiles is perfectly nice, sure, but mostly because she has a chance to grow up to be Joan Allen! Many happy returns of the day.

Is that really a pic of your cake?It looks very similar to our wedding cake…from about 10 years ago! we always called it the “Mad Hatter” cake. Loved it. Carrot cake with caramel was our flavor of choice.
