Time For The Blackberry/iPhone Shootout

One of the most popular Wallstrip episodes so far is the Blackberry shootout where I lost to Bijan in the finals.

If you haven’t seen it, I’ll embed the original shootout episode at the end of this post.

But now we have the news that you can only text half as fast on the iPhone as a Blackberry or other "qwerty" keyboard phone.

So now that Bijan is a convert to the iPhone, I challenge him to a rematch. He uses the iPhone, I use the Blackberry. Wallstrip can have first crack at filming it.

You in Bijan?

My money’s on Fred this time…

    1. Wilco

      oh definitely agree here.

So, this shoot-out needs two parts to it:(1) Text a message made up entirely of dictionary words — no proper nouns; and(2) Text a proper-noun- and acronym-heavy message. The iPhone’s typing correction will make (1) a lot different from (2) for its score, I’d bet.

Count me in.Me on the iphone vs you on an old fashioned but reliable bberry will be a good one. you’ll need every advantage you can get :)but if you really want to officially take my Wallstrip Blackberry Champion title, you’ll have to beat me on my Curve (that’s always in my back pack).ps: @charlie: et, tu Brute?p.p.s: @howard – do you still have my lucky headband …

T-Mobile is coming out with the Curve on September 24th. Wifi, 2mp camera, slimmer design (compared to 8700) & micro sd slot. http://www.boygeniusreport….

Considering that the article referenced says the 50% as fast statistic is for users that are new to the iPhone keyboard, and from what I’ve heard it takes a few days/weeks to get used to it. This could be close, but I’d have to bet against you, Fred!

    1. Wilco

A nonbeliever, are we?Yes I have an iPhone. No I’m not getting used to it yet…

  7. ErikSchwartz

It’s the iPhone…it’s not about facts, it’s about the perception…FWIW, I liked the old comment system better

    1. Jon Shaefer

what’s wrong with this current one?i much prefer it.

  8. greenskeptic

The glass will bead sweat as the competition heats up. Bberry will win, but oh, that i-nterface!

Fred, I’m assuming you’re referencing the study by User Centric where none of the people tested owned an iPhone and were given one minute…yes, one minute….to become familiar with it? In the test 20 users were given the one minute iPhone intro and then asked to text 6 messages with their current phone and 6 with the iPhone. (Excellent sample size, just large enough to put out a ridiculous press release over)Given Bijan will have sent at least 10 or 12 messages with his iPhone by the time of the challenge, my money is on him.How about each of you choose a charity and instead of “wagers” we donate to the winners cause? As Letterman says before Stupid Human Tricks – This is only an exhibition. This is not a competition. Please, no wagering

    1. randromp

Excellent analysis. But whatever it is, wagering always makes it more fun. Maybe we can do with it going to charity.

if bijan wins, i’m buying an iphone.

  11. simon

lol this was a funny ep

  12. Chris H.

Funny and original, I like it, the best iPhone vs. Blackberry post/video yet. I think the headbands really made it but Adidas warm-up suits for the next round would be even better.

  13. ifyoumakeit

I’m starting to feel some buyer’s remorse towards my iPhone, but it’s tempered with excitement as people homebrew tons of cool new apps. I’m still optimistic that this will force Apple to open up the platform to real development, but that’s probably not going to happen. And, oh yeah, Fred would crush Howard on a Crackberry vs. iPhone texting match.

  14. ifyoumakeit

Er, crush Bijan. Heck, he’d crush the both of them simultaneously. iPhone just ain’t made for typin’

  15. howardlindzon

That is a lot of chins I am sporting in that closeup.See you their boys.I have invited a few ladies to the event this time, a few hedge fund managers, Altucher, Cramer, and Quincy. Cage fight!

I fully agree with your insightful perspective, actually there is a similar thread at Frontier Blog( http://www.hwswworld.com/wp )

I’m in for a buck… I’ll take Fred’s mad thumb typing skillz over the iPhone poser any day of the week.Man, this comment section thing stinks…

    1. obscurelyfamous

Hi Tony, what particular gripes do you have with the comments?

  18. Jamie

iPhone is great and all but I’m not a convert until I get a real keypad. There’s no way I’m typing anything at a good pace with that touch screen.
