Go Liberty!

September and October are a great time for sports fans.

Today we had the US Open mens final – a rout by Federer, the opening day for NFL football and a big win for the Jets, and back to back homers by Sheffield and Matsui in the ninth inning to get the Yankees their seventh win in eight games.

We didn’t watch any of those games live (although I did Tivo the Jets game and am watching it now).

We went to see the NY Liberty, the WNBA team here in NYC. Jessica and Emily are good players and they love going to see the big girls play ball. After today, I think Becky Hammon is officially Jessica’s idol.

The best thing about the RNC’s visit to New York last month is that Madison Square Garden can’t host any basketball games right now. So the Libery are playing in Radio City Music Hall. That in itself is a great reason to go see them play. It’s a really unique visual experience to see a basketball game on a theater stage.

The Liberty played the worst first half of any game I’ve seen and we’ve been going to see them for the past four seasons. They only scored 17 points in the first half. But something must have gone down in hte locker room at halftime, because they came out strong in the second half, tied up the game with 10 minutes to go, and the game went down to the wire.

Becky Hammon, the leader of the team and the crowd favorite, hit the last two buckets down the stretch to win it for the home team. The crowd went wild and the Liberty won 64-62.

What a day for sports in NYC. Unless you are a Giants fan.
