A National Radio Network?
Droxy, the digital radio blog, points to a story on Reuters that suggests the leading terrestrial broadcasters are considering rolling out a national radio network that could compete with satellite.
Although I am an investor in and a board member of iBiquity which develops the HD radio technology that makes all of this possible, I don’t know if this story is accurate or not.
But it points out the benefits of digital technology. The radio business is in the midst of a massive upgrade of their exisiting spectrum from analog to digital, just like the phone companies did over the past ten years. When they are done, and I expect it will take them a lot less time to do the digital converstion, the radio spectrum will be used for all kinds of interesting things.
A nationwide network is just one of them, but its a great idea.
