Another Reason To Use Skype

The news this morning is that the nation’s top three telecomm providers, AT&T, Verizon, and Bell South, have been providing their call record databases to the NSA to build the world’s largest database for data mining about our phone calling habits.

I’ll leave aside the debate over whether this is legal or not, although I suspect it won’t be after our congress gets around to surveying the electorate on the issue.

But what a gift for Skype and the other VOIP offerings.  If you don’t like being spied on by your government, you can just do what the terrorists are already doing.  Use the Internet to make your phone calls.

Of course if begs the question why the government thinks the bad guys are using the traditional phone networks to communicate.  I doubt they are.  I certainly wouldn’t if I was one of them.
