The Gotham Gal Is A Superhero

Gothamgal
A recurring theme on Gotham Gal’s blog (my wife for those of you new to this blog) is the occasional frustrations of a woman who has given up the intellectual fruits of a full time job for the responsibility of raising a family.

In a post the other day, she ended with this. I loved it so much that I had to reblog it here.

When people ask me what I do, I do still take pause.  Sometimes I
answer – nothing that I get paid for.  But I came up with my favorite
answer the other day when I had to fill out my job title/description
for a political party that I had given to.  The Government finds it
necessary to know what you do when you give money to a candidate.  I
just wrote in Superhero.

I think you all know that she’s my superhero.

Forgot to ask.Fred, you mention they other day that you will be earmarking some of your new fund for iPhone type applications. Can you elaborate a bit. Will your approach be the same as a Series A financing or are you looking maybe to go downstream a bit with quick investments that may lead to traditional rounds. After all, building applications on existing platforms don’t take as much cash.

My wife has always felt that the question “What do you do?” is socially inappropriate, when talking to men as well as women, and I have absorbed that advice. These days, when I meet someone new and we’ve gotten into a conversation and I want to know stuff like that, I say “What are you interested in?”. I’ve found that works well and doesn’t offend anybody. And sometimes people are more interested in talking about their hobby or family than their career, anyway.

That’s a good line. I agree that too many social conversations are about workFred

Great job title! There was an email (or blog post) going around with many job titles for moms that was really neat and highly accurate. If I find it, I’ll let you know.

I personally think the answer “stay at mom” is a perfect answer – as is Superhero, I like that a lot :)The problem is that people somehow does not think it is a real job, when it is- should try it for a week. And more than 8 hours a day.So Superhero it is. Sounds about right 🙂
