The Donors Choose Meetup: November 4th, NYC

As I promised at the start of the Donors Choose campaign, I am going to do a Meetup with everyone who gave to the campaign.

Here are the details:

Who: Anyone who gives to the current Donors Choose Bloggers Challenge via my giving page

Teachers: We will have several of the teachers whose classrooms we gave to in attendance

Bloggers: We hope to have some of the other bloggers who participated in the challenge in attendance

Where: Washington Irving High School cafeteria Union Square neighborhood, NYC

Date: November 4, 2009

Time: 6:30pm to 8:30pm

What: I'll give a short talk, then work the crowd for the rest of the event

If you want to attend, you have to do two things:

1) Give to the current Donors Choose Bloggers Challenge via my giving page. Any amount will do. It's not about the amount, it's about the donation.

2) Sign up for the event on the Meetup page

We'll have a list of everyone who gave via my giving page at the event and we'll check everyone in that way.

I am really excited about this event. It was a reader, Dave in Hackensack, who gave me this idea back in August when I was doing my birthday challenge. I want to thank Elaine Perez of Donors Choose who has helped to make this a reality. I look forward to seeing you there.

Fantastic news. Just hope the Yankees can beat the Phillies before Game 6, which falls at that same time on Nov. 4th 🙂

    1. fredwilson

if it is game 6 that night, we’ll see what we can do for all the yankees and phillies fans. maybe some from MLB.com can help us figure out what do to

      1. jeremystein

the post season package is available on mlb.tv for $10. you can try sending an @ reply to @mlbtv on twitter. they are usually pretty responsive and might wave the fee for a good cause.

        1. fredwilson

          There is our answer!

    2. kidmercury

pfft, keep dreaming. phillies will repeat, no doubt.

      1. kirklove

No doubt Kid! But how depressed are you today that the Phils scored more points (runs) than the Eagles did yesterday. Ugh. Go Phils.

        1. kidmercury

eagles were pathetic yesterday. disgusting. andy reid is the problem, in my opinion. they also never take the time to establish the running game. but at least we got the phils! they’re looking sharp.

  2. kidmercury

damn i was hoping for late november….oh well. hope all have a good time indirectly perpetuating the public “education” system. boss i will holla at you in late nov/early dec when i am in nyc if you are around.

    1. fredwilson

      Please do

  3. Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry

I’ll be there in spirit, plane tickets are murder, I was hoping to make it to NYC next week but that’s too expensive as well. (Especially when you’re planning a wedding.)

    1. fredwilson

I know. Plane tickets have skyrocketed in the past six months. Wow

      1. Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry

They’re extremely correlated to commodities + the economy.

      2. ShanaC

You all are making me feel very glad about the price I paid to get to school…

    2. awaldstein

Just bought JFK-SF-LA-JFK swing 10 days out for less than $300 on AA. Cheap tix are out there if you have schedule flexibility.

  4. ErikSchwartz

I’ll be there. Baseball has already reached the “wait until next year” phase up here in New England (except for Bijan)

  5. awaldstein

I’m in. See you all there.

  6. kirklove

Done and Done. And thanks for adding a few more music related ones. I just had to give to the one called “Gooooooo…….Boomwhackers!!” How can you not with a name that awesome? Though I can imagine the horror on the teachers faces once they realize what they have unleashed. Go music!

    1. fredwilson

Yeah I love that project name too. Just gave 50 to it because you called it out. Thanks!

  7. James H

Unfortunately its going to be far too expensive for me to make it over mid week. Hopefully we can meet up next time you’re in the UK

  8. Dave Pinsen

“It was a reader who gave me this idea back in August when I was doing my birthday challenge.”Your readers seem to come up with some good ideas occasionally. 😉

    1. fredwilson

it was you Dave?i couldn’t recallif it was, i will edit the post to give credit where credit is due

      1. Dave Pinsen

To be scrupulously accurate, my idea was slightly different: I suggested holding an event like this at a bar.

        1. fredwilson

Well it was where I got the inspiration

  9. Jeff O'Hara

Wish I could make this but I’m going to be in the valley 🙁 Would have loved to meet the teachers we all helped out.

  10. Mark Essel

Maybe we can ustream live so folks that can’t make it, can still virtually participate. Avc’ers come from all over. Maybe get a live feed for chatting on a projector too (too far out?), and a chat/talk room.

    1. fredwilson

All good ideas. Under consideration. Thanks!

    2. Dave Pinsen

“Too far out”? Mark, we’re living in the future (what’s that Gibson quote — “The future is here; it’s just not widely distributed”?). Soon, you’ll be able to send your surrogate to an event like this.

  11. Mihai Badoiu

    I’ll be there. Looking forward.

    1. fredwilson

      Me too

  12. Nick Giglia

I will be there – I look forward to becoming more involved in this community and meeting some great people. As for the World Series….I’ll suck it up if it means the Yankees are actually in it.

  13. Eric Vreeland

I will be there, but I’m not really sure what you guys are talking about I’m pretty sure the Dodgers Yankees series will be over by then. Go Dodgers!!!!!

    1. fredwilson

      Nice!

  14. Melih Onvural

Won’t be able to make it the meetup, but I love the idea of paying back for content on a micro-payment level to the content creator or the charity of their choice.I feel like it’s the only way that I’d pay for content from The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, etc.

  15. daryn

Sounds like it’ll be a fun night, wish I could make it.More importantly, we’ve gone from 10 people and $750 less than two weeks ago, to $12,671 and 157 people as of this comment. That’s pretty awesome.

  16. jamesblake33

    Great. Looking forward to this.
