Mark Suster Interviews The Gotham Gal

joanne wilson, mark suster, the gotham gal

I talk a lot about the Gotham Gal on this blog but most members of this community haven't had the opportunity to see her in action. She spent last week in LA and dropped in on This Week In Venture Capital and had an hourlong chat with our friend Mark Suster. They covered a lot of ground, including sales as a key ingredient to entrepreneurship, women in tech, and what it was like to work with Jason Calacanis. It's long, just over an hour, and the audio isn't as loud as I'd like. But if you've got an hour to kill this weekend and are curious about my better half, its a good one.

I thought the same thing, lol.

Bummed I did not think to interview Gotham Gal before Suster. Well played

Once of the greatest and most put-together women I have ever had the pleasure to read – a person with vision and insight. You married up, Fred. Will Joanne write a book?

    1. fredwilson

actually she has a book proposal out right now. hopefully a publisher will pick it up

I saw it and highly enjoyed myself. Also the chats the went on in the stream chat are a great source for discussions etc.To bad the sound quality wasn’t to great but got fixed at the end of the interview.

What I’d really like to hear are her views on investing in non-tech, restaurant and community businesses. I have friends who are drawn to these businesses and products and they are under the radar. This is a topic that gets little play and is of great interest. And drives a type of entrepreneur that doesn’t get a lot of attention.

    1. fredwilson

she’s doing a lot of that. i’ll encourage her to blog about her thoughts on that category of investing

Please do…It would make an interesting blog segment, a book or even a series of live interviews with entrepreneurs in these culinary, heath related, fashion related verticals.Few have the chops and experience to take this on.

    2. Alex

Second that. Fred hasn’t bitten on this topic but if Gotham Gal would I know it would be valuable reading.

Interestingly, last week at a little restaurant in Malibu, I saw this guy at a nearby table and told my husband, “He looks like Fred Wilson, but Fred Wilson is probably in New York.” (If we’d been in SF or SV, I might have been more convinced that it was you.)I don’t think it was you but now at least I know it was geographically conceivable. Thanks for sharing the video — looking forward to an hour well spent.

I think Suster does This Week in VC (not this week in startups — as far as I know Jason still hosts that one)…and I *highly* recommend everyone go watch all the back episodes on youtube (the ones with Bill Gross, Jon Stienberg, and Brad Feld were my personal favorites but there are tons of great nuggets in all of them).Heading off to catch up on this latest episode now 🙂

Bill Gross interview is one of the best. A hero of mine and someone who has really changed our world.

    2. fredwilson

      yup, fixed it

I didn’t notice any real problems in the audio. If anybody does try this link – worked well for me. http://www.youtube.com/watc… – it’s not as great as our normal studio but we shot in off hours and had to opt for studio C. Interview was really fun – worth a watch for sure.Small edit for your post – my show is “This Week in VC” – Jason does “Startups.”

    1. fredwilson

sorry about that mark. that’s what i get posting from coachella :)i fixed it

Very true about having women in the workplace. For me, I find it daunting to tell my new found ideas to my girlfriend, because she sees things that I completely fail to see. But it something every idea has to go through. Glad to have my girlfriend around in the early stages. Its like testing. Here is a TED talk by Cheryl Sandberg that might be relevant.http://www.youtube.com/watc

Thanks for the great tips, as a female entrepreneur in tech and doing sales everyday – this was incredibly helpful.
