Fifty For Fifty Recap
AVC regulars have probably noticed that the Donors Choose widget is gone from the right sidebar. That's because the month of August 2011 has come and gone and the Fifty For Fifty campaign is over.
It was a smashing success.
365 people donated a total of $54,028 (as of right now) and helped over 10,000 students by funding programs that connect these students' families to their classrooms.
10,000 students is a lot of kids. And these are mostly kids who need some help. Their teachers thank you, I thank you, the Gotham Gal thanks you, and I sure hope their families thank you.
There's a meetup for everyone (all 365 people) who gave to this campaign as well as me and The Gotham Gal and some folks from Donors Choose on November 9th, from 6pm to 8pm, at the USV Event Space. The Meetup page is here if you'd like to attend.
Finally, I promised to post a list of all donors along with their Twitter handles. I will do that once I get the list from the Donors Choose team.
In closing, I just want to say that the outpouring of support on this campaign is deeply appreciated by The Gotham Gal and me. We could not have asked for a better 50th birthday present. Thank you.

Congrats again – $148 on average per donor is quite impressive.
I hadn’t done that math. It is very impressive
It is impressive, and it doesn’t even count all of it – I went back later to pick other projects, and must have gone through organically, because some of our later donations didn’t get counted under the 50 for 50 campaign. So your efforts actually raised more than you thought! Happy birthday, and I meet even be in NYC that week, so I’m hoping to make it to the meetup.
By doing so you have shown to the world what a tribe can do on the net for a simple cause.Congrats and may god make you live for 123 years :-).
That’s a long time!
was referring to the worlds documented evidence of living … 122 … yah i know it is hard to live in this era after 75 … happy living and help others live ….
Very well done. I still wished the Donors Choose model could expand internationally to other parts of the world where this approach would make a ton of difference.
Me too
You’re very good at combining business and charitable causes. Have you thought about a line of food products? Say, Wilson’s Own Balsamic Vinegrette (after tax profits go to charity). The other guy that did that was also married to a Joanne. ;-)Congrats on the raise and happy birthday again.
same good looks for the label too…
He was much better looking than me!
You fishing for a compliment? 😉
Nope
Love to attend, unfortunately probably a bit far. Although MrsF wouldn’t take any persuading with the incentive of shopping in NYC.
And she and I could do tea! That is, if I come. Not quite as far for me though.
Yes, 24 hours door to door for me! Used to be no problem, but I’m getting lazy…
I hope you’ll have better snacks than at the school. With Gotham Gal’s involvment, our expectations are higher 🙂
We will certainly try
If where I end up staying has an oven I will bake a bunch of banana bread to bring! 🙂
Well that’s a good reason to track down that meetup page.
Congrats…pleased to be a part of this.
It’s one donor for each day of your 50th year. It has a nice resonance to it. Well done and thank you for your own generosity.
I like that
idea: put a widget on your site for “donor of the day” highlighting one of the 365, which links to an ongoing DC donation page.
i think i need to give this community a rest from giving
Fair enough, I like the effect of a campaign versus a slow drip in driving awareness, but keep in mind that we give because we want to, not because we’re asked to. The ask is just a nudge.
Congrats on hitting the mark – 10k students is a huge number.
Fred, my son’s (age 4) favorite book at present is Zen Shorts — a children’s book ostensibly about a giant panda named Stillwater but in fact about the principles of Zen Buddhism. It is amazing that such a book even exists!Anyway… the most evolved character, Stillwater’s uncle Ry (a polar bear), gives gifts TO all his friends and relations on his birthday. This is just a long way of saying happy birthday and thanks for letting us participate in the gift you’ve given.-Ben
That’s something to aspire to
10,000 students is great! Congratulations Fred!
Looking forward to it.
That’s great. Not a very original comment I know, but worth saying.
Hi – I love that you’re doing this; is there a way I can contribute something?
Cheers! and congrats! to you and The Gotham Gal, Fred. It was a great way for you to apply your influence. You’ve assembled a fine community.
Wonder if I could convince my husband to spend our anniversary in NYC? BTW, congrats on a successful Fifty for Fifty Campaign!
Congrats to you and the wife on this.
wow, 10000 students!
This campaign inspired me to add a whole new fundraising layer/option to the marketplace we are building right now. Maybe we can even integrate with Donors Choose. Great!
Great job Fred – and Happy Birthday!
see you at 60 for 60
