Feature Friday: Laptop Stickers

I logged into Turntable a week or so ago and everyone on stage had laptop stickers.

Laptop stickers

I immediately started rummaging around the UI trying to figure out how to get some on my laptop. I figured it out pretty quickly and now when I get up on stage to play music, I'm showcasing some of the well known USV portfolio companies.

This is the start of a virtual economy inside of Turntable. They've got avatars and laptop stickers and all of that is free and accomplishment based. I'm excited to see what they do next with these virtual goods.

The Twitter bird is my favorite of those. A perfect organic image. What kind of bird is it? Does it have a name? I had a blue and white budgie when I was a child and I named it Jimmy Carter.

    1. fredwilson

you can credit the twitter bird to Biz Stone. it was his early work around the brand that resulted in all of that.

      1. jason wright

         The Biz bird. Good branding.

        1. fredwilson

that’s how i think of it, for sure

          1. jason wright

…but no eyes – flying blind. Not sure about that.

  2. William Mougayar

I’m still in the dark on using Turntable bc they aren’t in Canada yet. That’s a great idea. Do you have to pay for those stickers?

  3. Cam MacRae

I saw this on your tumblr and thought it was cute.I’ve been playing a few hands of Zynga Poker here and there and it’s pretty clear those guys have virtual goods nailed, plus there’s a great deal of stickiness too.As a side note, every time you blog about Turntable and I click through to their thanks-for-coming-but-our-masters-say-we-can’t-let-you-in splash page, I get a little more enraged at the intellectual monopoly granted to the world’s least innovative companies.Free market, my ass.

    1. jason wright

Free market my arse – is that your startup?

      1. Cam MacRae

Nah, there’s no money in it. (Comma duly added).

    2. JimHirshfield

      “Stickiness” ha ha.

  4. awaldstein

How do we get an avc.com sticker?i ‘might’ consider putting a sticker for this salon on my shiny, unblemished MacBook Air.

    1. RichardF

and t-shirt.C’mon Fred we want AVC schwag

      1. awaldstein

It’s summer in the city, we need Bball caps!

        1. RichardF

it’s been pouring down with rain here, we need umbrellas!

          1. awaldstein

Bumbershoots with logos are great. One of my very first jobs in marketing was working with the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle.

          2. RichardF

I’d never heard of the word bumbershoot, nor did I know Seattle had a festival.  I love Seattle (partly because of it’s proximity to Whistler).  Thanks for the new thing I learnt today Arnold!

          3. awaldstein

I loved Seattle when I lived there.Great sense of individual communities separated by hills and lakes. Great parks like Gasworks. And my favorite, grabbing the NY Times and jumping on a ferry on an early Sunday morning.Special place. Need to find a client there and spend more time.

          4. William Mougayar

Then you’ll have to go to Vancouver too…

          5. awaldstein

Vancouver was home for a bunch of years. A naturally beautiful place. Wreck Beach on the Pacific side cliffs north of UBC was my special spot there.

          6. Koslow

My brother moved out to Seattle a month ago, so I visited recently for the first tine. What a great place; full of different niches of culture and food. Pikes Place alone was worth the trip. Oysters the size of my palm..I’ll be at Bumbershoot 2012, thanks for the heads up!

          7. awaldstein

re: Bumbershoot. If you make a Pinterest board or tumblr with pics of the trip, let me know. I’d like to follow that experience.

          8. Koslow

I haven’t jumped on Pinterest yet. Just started a Tumblr but moving over to WordPress this weekend. I’m looking forward to figuring that project out. Who doesn’t love to tinker.I’m shopping around for a DSLR now, so those pictures should be incredible. :DI hadn’t heard of the festival till you mentioned it.Thanks again.

          9. awaldstein

Have fun.Big Tumblr fan. Built a couple of Pinterest boards last week to figure out some marketing strategies for a few clients. Pretty powerful tool if used right in the appropriate circumstance. My boards are at http://pinterest.com/awalds

          10. Koslow

I think I get it. It’s very easy to form an opinion, or extract a message after looking at a collage of pictures. Very easy to digest, and fun. This could easily fuel a brainstorm or supplement a PowerPoint. Looks like I’d be superhuman on a raw food food diet! Hard to believe this baby has 5 cups of spinach in it. thttp://luliluvskale.com/20…Your morning brew looks intriguing. What’s in it?

          11. awaldstein

Recipe is in the post. This morning, pre gym, I’m drinking a raw cocoanut shake with some greens. Amazing. These shakes are crossover products. LuLiTonix is slowly getting ready to launch. Benefits only those in downtown NY though 😉

          12. ShanaC

Got a name of a great festival in NYC?

          13. awaldstein

Actually no…but I have a million places that weave together to make this whole city a festival with me in the center.

          14. ShanaC

Hmm, I am looking to go to my first concert…oh well…

          15. Cam MacRae

            There’s a word for that… let me think… um… oh yeah – London.

          16. RichardF

London is a desert by comparison to my home country Cam!

          17. Cam MacRae

I’ve never been, but I’ve got a mate in Cardiff who loves it.

          18. RichardF

Cardiff is a fun city but there is always a big black cloud that sits over the Severn Bridge (the entrance to South Wales) and that’s where the rain starts!

          19. Donna Brewington White

Okay, so how do you make the name tagging feature work on the new Disqus? For instance, with old Disqus you start typing the name with @ in front and got a drop down list. Now, nada.Edit: This was supposed to be a response to Cam MacRae’s comment — what happened?

          20. Cam MacRae

It seems like once you get to a certain depth it keeps the reply link (old disqus made it go away) but inserts your reply inline and prepends the name. What is confusing is that the prepended name doesn’t appear until you refresh? so you think you replied at the wrong level. Baffled me too!

          21. Donna Brewington White

            Danke, Cam.

          22. obscurelyfamous

@mentions work the same way, but the new UI is incomplete here.I think you’re catching a product update with some caps on nesting to preserve the intended ux.Some quirkiness here in this week’s update. That’s what you get for being a beta previewer. 😉

          23. Donna Brewington White

Thanks, Daniel. The price one pays for wanting to champion innovation! Future generations of Disqus users will thank me. 😉

          24. obscurelyfamous

The current generation of the Disqus team thanks you now!

          25. Donna Brewington White

And I thank you and your team, Daniel!

          26. William Mougayar

Edit/Saves haven’t been working in the beta. is that intended as well?

          27. obscurelyfamous

Nope… should be working. Let me check.

          28. FAKE GRIMLOCK

WHO THIS REPLY TO? THREADING NOT REPRESENTED IN VISUALS ANY MORE.THAT BAD IDEA.

          29. William Mougayar

ENGAGIO PRESERVE THREADING WELL. YOU SEE THIS ON ENGAGIO LIKE A CHARM.

          30. Donna Brewington White

P.S. I don’t get a dropdown name menu any more when I try to use the @mention feature — is that what you mean by the UI being incomplete?

          31. obscurelyfamous

            Yup

        2. Tom Labus

          Baseball caps, oh yeah.

        3. ShanaC

No, I look bad in those – straw cloche instead!!!

      2. William Mougayar

Yup. Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.

        1. Tom Labus

          Baseball caps, please

        2. Brad Lindenberg

No matter how big or small 🙂

          1. William Mougayar

That’s right. All ideas are born small and immature, just like babies.

          2. karen_e

You guys are having Funny Friday.

          3. William Mougayar

Is it Friday? I’m delirious after landing from a red eye.

          4. Donna Brewington White

At least it’s Feature Friday. I wasn’t ready for the shock of “Fun Friday” — this week has zoomed by leaving me exhausted.Although the natives have turned it into Fun Friday anyway. Ya gotta love this community!

      3. fredwilson

JLM and William are working on t-shirtsto be honest i am way more into virtual schwag than physical schwag

        1. John Best

Which reminds me, I’m informed I have a package waiting at home…

        2. RichardF

I’m the opposite it’s been a long time since I had to buy a golf umbrella

        3. ShanaC

          more ecofriendly?

        4. panterosa,

is there a dino involved in the t-shirts?i would offer my services since I animate letters for a children’s series if there were interest.

          1. FAKE GRIMLOCK

            MAYBE.

        5. Max Yoder

Real and virtual swag that benefits core AVC causes like the Academy for Software Engineering would be great.

        6. JLM

Speaking of which I have the tee shirts on hand. How do you want to proceed? ThxSee my comment above.

          1. Donna Brewington White

            An etsy account?

      4. JLM

Email meNameAddressTee shirt sizeand one is on its way to you, my friend.

        1. RichardF

           done! thanks v much

          1. JLM

            On its way.

        2. Donna Brewington White

          I want one!

        3. ShanaC

I want one too, and I am afraid I am too late 🙁

        4. William Mougayar

At this rate, you’ll be giving away all these t-shirts. Do you want to flip the switch on the shopping cart system we talked about?

    2. jason wright

Competition time – a logo design.

      1. andyidsinga

        AVC …its whats for breakfast!

        1. Matt A. Myers

*A part of a balanced breakfast..

        2. Donna Brewington White

Only problem is that for some it’s lunch or dinner (or tea — for the Brits) or something after or in between. World-wide community — lots of time zones.

          1. andyidsinga

Okay 🙂 How about this :”Its always breakfast somewhere, how about a little AVC?”

          2. Donna Brewington White

            Getting there… 😉

    3. Don Daszkowski

Good idea Arnold!Check out the links I have bookmarked for stickers and they make some great iPhone skins too, I have never used this company but seems like they would be goodhttp://www.stickermule.com/… http://www.stickermule.com/…

  5. Ciaran

    It’s Habbo Hotel, isn’t it? #Idon’tgetit

  6. JimHirshfield

Virtual shwag. Does it leave a virtual glue shmear when you remove it.

  7. John Best

My ultrabook bears a single sticker (so far) – shelby.tv.

  8. PrasannaKrishnamoorthy

All the others have some pretty things, and Fred puts his portfolio companies as his laptop stickers. And he says he isn’t a marketer 🙂

  9. awaldstein

Need to say abt D12…’voting up’ is much more actionable and contextual gesture than ‘likes’.Well done to the Disqus team. Starting to feel very comfortable with this new rev of the product. Big win is ‘My Disqus’.

    1. Cam MacRae

Yes, but once a community exceeds it’s (in)civility threshold no good will come of voting down.

    2. fredwilson

      just upvoted this comment

  10. Brad Lindenberg

I want to upload a photo of my laptop sticker from iPhone via disqus but it doesn’t let me. Feature Friday Feature request!!

    1. fredwilson

i want that feature back too

  11. William Mougayar

I never liked real stickers. I thought they mess up a pretty object. But virtual stickers I can dig. They don’t leave marks if you remove them.

    1. awaldstein

How orderly you are my friend ;)Next time you are in NYC, you need to leave the orderly world of Madison Park and let’s go to LES, have a glass of wine at 10 Bells, take a gander at a world tagged with (messy) personality.

      1. William Mougayar

Interesting…Do I have to let my hair down too? That would be messy. I was looking at Thomson LES actually, funny you mention LES.

        1. awaldstein

Business traveler’s rule is usually to stay as close to where your next morning meeting will be. Unless that is breakfast with me, LES is a better place to go play and eat then to stay.

    2. FAKE GRIMLOCK

SAME.ME, GRIMLOCK, ONLY USE BEAUTIFUL THINGS THAT NOT NEED UGLY BORINGNESS COVERED UP BY ANYTHING.

      1. William Mougayar

        You bet.

  12. jason wright

If organic cotton t-shirts and natural color dyes then chapeau, but if pesticides and herbicides and other nasty things then the brand is off to a bad start. Values.I personally wouldn’t want any physical product. Maybe you should take soundings before rushing out and ordering a boat load.

  13. Robert Holtz

I’m a sucker for schwag both physical AND virtual. I’m totally down to buy AVC schwag. The only AVC-themed schwag I have right now is my physical FAKE GRIMLOCK shirt which I treasure dearly btw.

    1. FAKE GRIMLOCK

      NO BRAG, EVERYONE ELSE CRY.

  14. Jing Jin

Fred, great example of how startups can leverage their fan base as brand ambassadors and tap into virtual economies.  What is your take on feasible approaches to monetizing these virtual communities?  Would it be a badges-based reward system a la Hunch, GetGlue, and Foursquare?  Or new web currencies?  What about scaling challenges in terms of integrating these communities amongst various startups? In any case, haven’t logged onto Turntable for a while.  The new laptop stickers give me an added incentive hop back on the DJ deck!

    1. fredwilson

      please come back!

      1. Jing Jin

        Will do!

  15. bsoist

When I logged in for hair metal Friday last week I saw them. I opened a new window to get some and couldn’t find them. I found them in the dropdown in the room. Nice idea. Looking forward to more of them, and I second the motion for an abc.com sticker.

  16. Michael Shafrir

I haven’t participated much (at all) in virtual economies/goods, so asking this from a position of ignorance in hopes that the AVC community can educate me:For a company like Turntable, is this a viable tentpole of their business model?  Or is it something tangential, hacked together in a weekend, and seeing if it can grab some incremental dollars to whatever music-based business model they put together?I realize Zynga (and others) have built massive businesses on virtual goods, so not questioning whether this works conceptually, but I’m having trouble seeing if this is a major piece of business for a company like Turntable.Thanks.

    1. John Best

I think you’re right – I can’t see this forming a sizeable chunk of their business either. There are numerous examples of real world cash being exchanged for virtual goods (http://lorehound.com/news/p… , http://www.gamebandits.com/… etc.) but I don’t think this is a road turntable will travel far down.Aside from prestige, the usual motivator for buying virtual goods is competitive advantage. Whilst the laptop logos add prestige, I think that kind of competitive structure would be counter productive (and tough to execute well).

    2. fredwilson

it is something they promised to build so they could get licensed by the music industry

  17. JamesHRH

What does it say about me if I zero interest in virtual swag?Or that I used to be really into IRL swag & no longer am?Free AVC psych assessment on Fun Friday!

    1. ShanaC

You have a taste for free design?

    2. Matt A. Myers

It may be that you have no incentive to engage with random people, or not wanting to.I like engaging with people with similar interests, and I’m single, and I wish more people reached out to me. I try to initiate friendly conversation with strangers all of the time – when there’s some sort of an in anyway.Stickers can be such a way to show what communities you’re involved in, what you support, etc..Sports have done this for a long-time, and with something functional like baseball caps  it’s a good way for fans to show their support (all the time or just on game nights). It transfers perfectly into other communities.

      1. panterosa,

Stickers/t-shirts always good to start meeting girls. Best for day-gaming.

    3. FAKE GRIMLOCK

YOU BECOME SUFFICIENT IN OWN SELF.

    4. fredwilson

i have always hated IRL schwag. i don’t want to wear a logo.

  18. kskobac

I love this feature- what a perfect way to bring personalization into the experience. Being able to turn my turntable macbook into a reflection of my real-life macbook, covered in stickers, is perfect geek fun!

  19. ShanaC

What kind of real stickers do you all have on your physical laptops?(I just have bit.ly fish – it is meant to be a joke, my last name Carp. I would have preferred koi stickers though 🙂 )

    1. Dale Allyn

I have a feeling that @wmoug:disqus and I are kindred spirits in this area. A sticker on my MBP would make me a little nuts, especially as stickers started peeling and aging. Ick. 😉  If they were that sort of sticky vinyl that uses no glue (like the old play sets with stick-on clothing) I might join in, but partially peeling stickers with ratty edges mess up the look of a nice design to me. :)P.S. to add: I like the idea of a koi sticker on your laptop though.

      1. panterosa,

I love vinyl. and whiteboard vinyl to make your own designs or just cover the wall!

        1. ShanaC

          Me too.

    2. fredwilson

      soundcloud, meetup, hackNY, foursquare, kickstarter

  20. JLM

I had some AVC.com “firestarter” tee shirts made — hot off the presses — and am working out the details on how to peddle them w/ Fred.Pay Window tee shirts are at the printers right now.First 20 folks who contact me w/NameAddressTee shirt sizeget a FREE tee shirt. Freemium applies even to tee shirts. You have to return a picture of you wearing the tee shirt. Not too bad a price, eh?Once Fred tells me how he wants to distribute them, they will be widely available though I only had a gross printed at first. This is Fred’s deal and I am only the enabler but this is going to be fun. I have encouraged Fred to award tee shirts to particularly good comments/commentators.Proceeds, if any, go to charity..

    1. Matt A. Myers

Sending you an email!!Edit: Can I just wear the shirt with nothing else in said picture?

      1. JLM

You gotta do what you gotta do, my friend. I can’t advise you on this.

        1. Matt A. Myers

          This. Will. Be. Fun.

    2. Brandon Marker

      do they come in shmedium?

      1. JLM

        Hell yes.

        1. Brandon Marker

          I’m ready to buy!

    3. John Rorick

Let me know when the tank tops arrive. AVC.com apparel deserves a ‘gun’ show.

      1. ShanaC

Same! Depending on the shirt size, I could wear it as a shirtdress!

      2. JLM

Sorry, under the current administration all guns are banned and being confiscated.

        1. Dale Allyn

Not mine! My hands are still warm and very much alive.

    4. FAKE GRIMLOCK

      IS PICTURE OF SHIRTS?

  21. Matt A. Myers

It’s all discovery through serendipity or subtle interest in what someone’s involvement is or might be within a community.’Wow. That girl’s cute, I wonder what she’s all about. “Hey – I see you hangout at X? I do too.””AVC sticker – fuck yah! “Hey — you’re on AVC? Let’s chat tech!”‘I’m sitting in a Starbucks right now. There are 9 laptops out, 7 people studying (exam time for university students). None of the laptops have stickers on them. What a ripe market to perpetuate.I think Apple and other manufacturers have had enough free prime branding space, and it’s time to promote using stickers (or similar) as a gateway to engagement and discovery.I have some ideas relating to this, well, a need that will need to be filled at some point in the future. I’ll have to make a note to contact Turntable team about it.. I don’t even know if it’s accessible in Canada yet?

    1. Cam MacRae

I few years ago I would go to a co-working meet every couple of weeks. Laptops covered in stickers were pretty standard – startup schwag was still around – and they did catalyse discussion above and beyond the normal co-working fare.Do agree with others that vinyl is best.

      1. Matt A. Myers

        Vinyl’s coming back!

        1. panterosa,

          Don’t forget cassettes!

  22. Guest

One thing’s for sure. The pictures of the munchkins using their laptops are cute.

    1. jason wright

Three and four look like gremlins,  twin gremlins. The one with the crucifix looks scared.

  23. Hong Quan

Darn, I clicked your tweet hoping this was going to be a dissertation on the significance of laptop stickers in startup culture. Alas, maybe I’ll have to write that post myself. 🙂

    1. FAKE GRIMLOCK

      LIKE TATTOOS FOR LAPTOPS.

    2. fredwilson

i love laptop stickers. if you write that post, please let me know

  24. JLM

Mattie Myers — first mover in the tee shirt Freemium campaignRichard Forster — a close secondAn Englishman and a Canuck, come on you Americans

    1. Matt A. Myers

      *Fist pump* Yesss!!

    2. Cam MacRae

I’ll nibble…An Englishman, a Canadian, and an Australian walk into a bar.The barman says, “Is this some kind of joke?”

      1. RichardF

My favourite was at the time of the rugby world cup:A Welshman walked into a bar in New Zealand on his own….. the English, Irish and Scotsman had all gone home

        1. Cam MacRae

Perfect. Nothing satisfies like sending the English home.

          1. RichardF

             oh yes…..

      2. William Mougayar

Keep going. Did the barman stop talking when you walked in?

        1. Cam MacRae

Sorry, William, I had to get some sleep! I do know one Canadian joke in this genre that’s suitable for AVC’s timeslot:A Canadian walks into a bar. On the stool next to his is some footwear. He says to the bartender, “What’s this, a boot?”

    3. panterosa,

Not sure which size I will fit. You know the chest size is an issue. Can I get some help?

  25. Scott

How has no one mentioned the FB group around the best designs: https://www.facebook.com/pa…Yes, that is Godzilla made of Twitter stickers…

    1. fredwilson

      holy shit. that is awesome!

  26. matthughes

Considering bumper stickers are one of world’s most egregious tragedies, I’m adamantly opposed to this. Can you imagine the horror…?”Don’t blame me, I voted for SOPA.””Welcome to America, now learn to write code.””I ‘heart’ Silicon Alley””My other MacBook Air is a 13″I just can’t bare it. 🙂

  27. Pete Griffiths

I think stickers are even bigger in Asia.Have you looked into this Fred?

  28. William Mougayar

What do these virtual stickers cost?

    1. fredwilson

      nothing right now

  29. William Mougayar

“rummaging around the UI”…I love that quote. Don’t we all do that when we want to find something…It’s like me vs. the UI.

    1. Donna Brewington White

“rummaging around the UI” — and I thought he was just AFK

      1. William Mougayar

AJK? I had to look it up. “away from the keyboard”. Wow Donna, you spend a lot of time online, you do know your online slang. Don’t go ROFL on me now!

        1. fredwilson

Ha ha! Thanks, Fred. I take that as a true compliment coming from you!

No worries, I do not ROFL. Although if you search the AVC archives, you will find a photo of Fred doing this very thing. And, yes, I do spend a lot of time online. I am there so much for work that it is easy to take a quick social media break — and turntable.fm is great as background to whatever else I am doing. Well, that’s the plan but I end up interacting because now I’ve made “friends”. I learn the language because whenever I don’t understand something, I ask. I don’t pretend to be cool. I get to interact with a whole different crowd on turntable — many of them are half my age and that is SO fun!

Next time I’m in the US, I’ll get on Turntable.fm and find you and Fred.

Hi Fred – Long time no comment –  ( life in a startup 🙂  I saw this and immediately thought “I want one of those stickers” – So great sales job (advertently or otherwise).  However imagine my disappointment …>>We’re very sorry, but while we would love to let you in and rock out with us, we need to currently restrict turntable access to only the United States due to licensing constraints. We are working very hard to try and get you in as soon as possible. If you believe this is a mistake and you are located in the United States, please e-mail help [at sign] turntable dot fm Again, sorry, and we hope to see you soon. Billy ChasenCEO>>It seems to me they are missing a trick here – surely they could start signing up interested parties even if the US Intellectual Property Market is determined to undermine US exports !Interested to hear comments on what I assume is a legal minefield

    1. fredwilson

we will be back online internationally. we have to do it market by market. legal minefield is an appropriate way to phrase it

They need to start logging each user’s music preferences. Also enable cross-platform compatibility with Last.fm, Soundcloud, and Google Play music. For example, I have a diverse array of Jazz, Fusion, and Electronic music. It’s good to discover new music to torrent for free and upload to my cloud library. :)If turntable is one of your portfolio companies (have funding to pay people to do stuff), where’s the official API and Android app?

    1. fredwilson

yes, i agree with all of that

http://www.patagonia.com/us…Modify this t-shirt design.Chouinard becomes WilsonEquipment for Alpinists becomes Equipment for Revolutionariesand the in the diamond logo I see an A, a V, and a C.Mr. Chouinard has his strong opinions about now and the future. He comes out of an environmentalist background, which got mentioned quite a few times in yesterday’s round table discussion. He knows a thing or two.I always think that the best ideas and designs should have their origins in something that comes before it from another realm. An evolution. Just picking something out of nowhere is something with no context.

    1. William Mougayar

I agree that a consistent theme in design identity is a good idea.

Most comments fly here, but you’re getting pretty weird.

  38. ShanaC

it should be deleted now, but this is getting seriously annoying that I can’t block all of them…..

  39. panterosa,

wait, shouldn’t there be a pay window tattoo for when you get there?

  40. Brandon Marker

Now, does that mean everyone in the community gives me $10? 😉

  41. Andy

    $10, book it.

  42. ShanaC

    I rather get binary code

  43. panterosa,

Oh and I thought it would be so fun to disrupt the tramp stamp with a pay window image, rather than the usual crap.  Maybe we need more chics at the pay window for that movement.Would be great with FG chicken underwear (thong).

  44. Andy

Haha right on man, see ya in a year.

  45. FAKE GRIMLOCK

ME NOT EXACTLY SURE YOU WANT TATTOO SAY “PAY WINDOW” RIGHT ABOVE THAT LOCATION ON ANATOMY.

  46. ShanaC

    haha, very funny.
