Happy Valentine's Day

My two favorite holidays are Thanksgiving when we are thankful for family and food and Valentine’s Day when we celebrate love and the people we love.

Love is a powerful thing, maybe the most powerful thing. And I am blessed to have a lot of it in my life.

So I hope everyone in AVC land takes time today to be with your loved ones and celebrate the love in your life.

Happy Valentine’s Day

if there was a beef amongst holidays, no doubt thanksgiving would win. but i’ll take the under on valentine’s day. overly commercialized, and celebrating the love in your life is something we do, or should be doing, everyday

I agree. This is a clear case of having to do something strictly because of what the group has decided to do as a result of the influence of the greeting card companies and restaurants (which have special menus for this day that rivals NYE). [1]I ask this question. Let’s say a man jumps from the train platform to save his wife from getting hit by a train. Let’s say she gives him a kidney at some point. My guess is that they still buy cards every year because ‘that’s what you do’. I hate that type of thinking.[1] Well at least the cost is under $5 for the card. Not like having to buy a diamond ring to get engaged which came about as a result of marketing by Debeers in the late 40’s and 50’s. (Imagine the impact on house down payments..)https://www.americangemsoci…In 1947, De Beers launched its now classic slogan, “A Diamond is Forever.” This campaign spurred even more sales. The implied durability of a diamond conveyed the meaning in the American psyche that marriage is forever. A diamond’s purity and sparkle have now become symbols of the depth of a man’s commitment to the woman he loves in practically all corners of the world.

Sorry. It was Marilyn Monroe, in the 50’s, when she sang ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ that doomed us forever. 🙂

Watching 48 hours over the weekend about Robert Durst and seeing the same pictures come up again and again (from HBO’s The Jinx) I said to my wife that I might come up with a line of Durst themed greeting cards. Durst, Susan Berman (with that terrible haircut), Kathleen Durst and the other major players surrounding the case. She laughed and thought it was funny. So here is the first card which I am going to give her today. [1][1] If I had more time I’d put this on Kickstarter…. https://uploads.disquscdn.c

Happy Valentine’s Day!My husband and I are sitting in a hospital waiting room together. Our oldest is having a follow-up surgery to the one he had in December following a serious auto accident, with the goal of restoring full range of motion to his shoulder.Going through times like this helps you to know what your love is made of.Can’t think of anyone else I’d rather sit here with than this guy.(Update: Surgeon came out of OR a few moments ago very pleased with the results. Our son will be fine.)

    1. Mac

Donna, for every parent here who has sat in a waiting room while their child is having surgery, regardless of the reason, know that we send the best of wishes to you and your family. Sorry to hear about the accident.

Having been run over on a walking path by a car…….he will not sleep well for six weeks. It will be hell. But the most important thing is physical therapy. He needs to go the best.Three days a weekThey need to start off in the hot water tank with balls and paddlesThen after the rubber band pullsAfter that manipulation which makes your eyes tear.Followed by TENS therapyAnd then ice down.Finished off by cortisone and steroids. (that was twenty years ago I was with some pro atheletes)My place made you touch a sign before you could come in that said: “Pain is Temporary, Pride is Forever!”

Glad to hear that your son will be fine ! Best wishes to you and your family.

BillMcNeely:this may apply to the majority if not all of the male contributors on this blog. Those contributors who are not single and have a significant other in your lives realize that you have actually married up or have a relationship that enhances you verses the other way around. How the women you have in your lives allowed you to upgrade is a mystery. :-)Thanks for sharing your beautiful, intelligent and strong Valentine for life BillMcNeely.

      1. Dave Pinsen

Those contributors who are not single and have a significant other in your lives realize that you have actually married upWhen everyone says this, it becomes a meaningless cliche. I think Barack Obama may have popularized it, saying he “married up” when he met Michelle.

        1. PhilipSugar

This is just mean spirited. I share conservative financial views. But why make it mean spirited? I hope both parties to a marriage think they “married up”. I hope they think that no matter what sex they are.

          1. Dave Pinsen

That you call it mean spirited suggests you don’t believe he married up.”Married up” is an invidious, self-deprecating phrase. It can’t apply to both partners at the same time. “Married well” can.

        2. creative group

Dave Pinsen:no disrespect, (Very much misused when what comes next could be perceived as disrespect) but marrying up didn’t require Obama to legitimize the phrase. (Actually at the time Obama married Michelle the lawyer he definitely was marrying up) The platitude becomes meaningless to those who don’t understand the true meaning or are still disgruntled about their last divorce. It comes a time when the smart person realizes it was them all along and discontinues projecting their shortcomings in relationships on the woman. (Almost certain a overreach of what you meant)The following can be considered banalities:A chain is only as strong as its weakest linkA fool and his money are soon partedA good man is hard to find A house divided against itself cannot standA leopard cannot change its spotsA penny saved is a penny earned A picture paints a thousand wordsA place for everything and everything in its placeA woman’s place is in the home A woman’s work is never done Actions speak louder than words All good things come to he who waitsAll things must passAll’s fair in love and war An apple a day keeps the doctor awayBeauty is in the eye of the beholderBeggars can’t be choosers Better late than never Better safe than sorry Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at allBirds of a feather flock together Blood is thicker than water Boys will be boys Count you blessingsDo unto others as you would have them do unto you Don’t bite the hand that feeds youDon’t count your chickens before they are hatched Don’t cross the bridge till you come to it Don’t put all your eggs in one basket Don’t try to walk before you can crawl Easy come easy go Every dark cloud has a silver lining Every dog has his day Finders keepers, losers weepers First things first Flattery will get you nowhereGood things come to those who wait Great minds think alike Hard work never did anyone any harmHe who laughs last laughs longest He who lives by the sword shall die by the swordHindsight is always twenty-twenty History repeats itself Home is where the heart is If God had meant us to fly he’d have given us wings If a job is worth doing it is worth doing well If at first you don’t succeed try, try and try againIf you can’t beat em, join em If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchenIt goes without saying It never rains but it poursIt takes one to know oneIt’s better to give than to receiveIt’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at allIt’s never too lateIt’s not worth crying over spilt milk It’s the early bird that gets the wormIt’s the squeaky wheel that gets the grease Keep your chin up Laughter is the best medicine Let bygones be bygonesLet sleeping dogs lie Let the punishment fit the crime Life is what you make itLightening never strikes twice in the same place Like father, like sonLove is blind Make love not war Misery loves company Money doesn’t grow on treesMoney makes the world go round Money talks Never judge a book by its coverNever put off until tomorrow what you can do today Nothing is certain but death and taxes Oil and water don’t mix One good turn deserves another Opportunity only knocks once Out of sight, out of mindPossession is nine tenths of the law Practice makes perfect Put your best foot forward Revenge is a dish best served cold Rome wasn’t built in a day Stupid is as stupid does Talk is cheap That which does not kill us makes us stronger The darkest hour is just before the dawn The ends justify the means The exception which proves the ruleThe more things change, the more they stay the same The pen is mightier than sword The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach There’s no place like home There’s no smoke without fire There’s no time like the present There’s one born every minute Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat itTo err is human, to forgive divine To the victor goes the spoilsTomorrow never comes Too many cooks spoil the broth Truth is stranger than fiction Two heads are better then one Two wrongs don’t make a rightWhere there’s a will there’s a way Worrying never did anyone any good You catch more flies with honey than with vinegarBad eggBack seat driverCome hell or high waterCut off your nose to spite your faceDiamond in the rough – ADiamond is forever – ADog daysEat drink and be merryEnd of storyFace the musicFeeding frenzyFly by the seat of your pants Fly on the wallFrom sea to shining seaFull of piss and vinegarGet off on the wrong footGet used to itHell has no fury like a woman scornedHit the ground runningHit the hayI have not slept one winkI will wear my heart upon my sleeveIs the Pope Catholic?Just in time Knock on woodKnow the ropesKnow which way the wind blows Less is moreLet there be lightLet your hair downLevel playing fieldLike the DickensMiddle of the roadMuch Ado about NothingNever the twain shall meetNew kid on the blockNot playing with a full deckO Romeo, Romeo! CONTRIBUTORS:Valentines Day started as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country.Again something began as an acknowledgment for those Christians who believe in Saints and has evolved into a cultural and commercial celebration. (Definitely more of the later)Just like any observance the secular hijacks it and commercializes it. Just like pagan Holloween was usurped from Children and now adults found a way to commercialize it.Drink up and be Merry.Ole Grinch creative group with the facts again. Always pissing on the party. You just refuse to toe the line with alternative facts. Paganism is intertwined in the American culture just accept it and sit in the corner. If us Contributors require a celebration not hurting anyone and reminding us to love the one we should be showing love and affection daily who are this no nothing hiding behind a user name are you to tell us any different. Damn fool creative group.
