Audio Of The Week: Mythology Was The First Science Fiction

I loved this A16Z podcast featuringĀ Adrienne Mayor who recently authored “Gods & Robots: Myths, Machines, and Ancient Dreams of Technology“. Early in this podcast Adrienne states that mythology was the first science fiction and then she goes on to explain why. It’s a fun and educational listen. My favorite kind.

When I listened to this A16Z podcast a week ago I immediately purchased to audio book. It’s really helps me create a mental framework for understanding our current historical landscape.

As has been said, this is a helpful framing of the history of technology and society. However, we should guard against it becoming a constraining influence on how we see our societies developing with modern technologies. Slavery was the foundation of Greek society and economy. The subtle difference is that today, for example, Zuckerberg has refined the process by engineering modern digital technologies to make it easier for Facebook users to (unwittingly?) enslave each other. The most sophisticated system of slavery is when the slaves don’t even realise that they are slaves.
