Funding Friday: Salvage Swings

There is a lot to like about this project which I backed this morning and is ending tomorrow.

1/ They use cross laminated timber (CLT), which is a wood product that is getting a lot of adoption now. The Gotham Gal and I are building two CLT buildings in Brooklyn and we are big fans of CLT.

2/ They are using salvaged wood to make their CLT.

3/ This is public art, which is another thing I love.

4/ Swings are awesome. At age 57, I will still sit on a swing and go for it.

5/ This is part of FigmentNYC, a public art festival in NYC this summer.

So with all of that lead-in, here is Salvage Swings. You can back it here.

Wrapping the building in CLT as a facade or building the building in CLT?

Yep! where did the expression “swing both ways” come from anyway?

The Figment NYC Public Art Project is taking place at Roosevelt Island’s Lighthouse Park, located in the East River between Manhattan and Queens. It’s a gorgeous location. It’s a free participatory art project involving the Swing project and many other individual submissions. You can submit your own art project, donate to Figment NYC or volunteer to work at the project as well. Here’s more info if you are interested.http://rooseveltislander.bl

Pull quote: “Swings are awesome. At age 57, I will still sit on a swing and go for it.”(Also, video or it didn’t happen.)The music in their video is wonderful.

I’ve seen and sat on such swings in traditional Indian homes as a kid. Good stuff. There should be museums to preserve this and other similar traditional / handmade / crafts and stuff. Don’t know if they exist.By the look of it, the one in the picture above is made of rosewood, a pretty good hardwood used for furniture and carvings in India. My grandparents had some items made of it. It looks really great and takes a good polish.

The Gotham Gal and I are building two CLT buildings in Brooklyn and we are big fans of CLT.Side projects of VCs, like those of devs! There should be a semi-regular feature on Hacker News (or on a similar site for VCs – Venture News?), talking about it. A different perspective … If anybody wants to implement the idea, go ahead. Remember where you got the idea from. 30% cut of the profits is okay. Send it to my BItcoin address. [1]Interesting product, CLT. Looked it up in in Wikipedia. Lists some pros and cons and some “citations needed” for some claims about it, both pros and cons.[1] /jk

Great post. Swings today make me sort of sad though because the chain lengths are always so “safety short”.I haven’t read hat much about CLT, but it also may be a lot better for occupants and firefighters compared to many of the other “engineered wood” products because the CLT behaves more like “heavy timber” under fire conditions than lightweight construction using trusses and wooden I-beams. Very cool.I think this is my first comment on AVC, but I’ve been reading for years. The email verification for spam prevention was pretty simple, hopefully it will do a decent job. Killing of spam by hand is a monotonous and thankless task.

The laminating resins are also a concern, di-isocyanates and other cyclic compounds are known cancer causing compounds.Years from now we will also uncover the importance of Brick,Stone and Wood on health.
